Synopsis
Justice League: Darkness Unleashed is a 2024 American superhero film based on the DC Comics superhero team the Justice League. It is a loose inspiration of the Injustice video games and the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Legendary Pictures and the Stone Quarry, the film stars Alexander Skarsgård as Bruce Wayne / Batman, alongside an ensemble cast including Taissa Farmiga, Kellan Lutz, Ella Purnell, John David Washington, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, Rhona Mitra, Lance Reddick, Michael Gambon, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Set in the near-future where humanity is enslaved, the cruel Justice Armada, led by Superman, is at war with a revived Justice League, led by Batman himself. As the rivalry of the former friends further heats the war, Batman is forced to make a decision to save his friends and loved ones. The film opened in theaters on December 8th, 2024; Darkness Unleashed was a financial success, grossing $781 million worldwide. The film received universal acclaim from critics and was praised for its storytelling, visual effects, themes, musical score, direction, screenplay, action sequences, ambition, performances (particularly Skarsgård, Farmiga, Purnell and Cumberbatch), and emotional weight, as well as for its tribute to the late Kevin Conroy. It garnered numerous award nominations and won several, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Skarsgård), and Best Supporting Actress for Purnell.
