Synopsis

Justice League: Darkness Unleashed is a 2024 American superhero film based on the DC Comics superhero team the Justice League. It is a loose inspiration of the Injustice video games and the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Legendary Pictures and the Stone Quarry, the film stars Alexander Skarsgård as Bruce Wayne / Batman, alongside an ensemble cast including Taissa Farmiga, Kellan Lutz, Ella Purnell, John David Washington, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, Rhona Mitra, Lance Reddick, Michael Gambon, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Set in the near-future where humanity is enslaved, the cruel Justice Armada, led by Superman, is at war with a revived Justice League, led by Batman himself. As the rivalry of the former friends further heats the war, Batman is forced to make a decision to save his friends and loved ones. The film opened in theaters on December 8th, 2024; Darkness Unleashed was a financial success, grossing $781 million worldwide. The film received universal acclaim from critics and was praised for its storytelling, visual effects, themes, musical score, direction, screenplay, action sequences, ambition, performances (particularly Skarsgård, Farmiga, Purnell and Cumberbatch), and emotional weight, as well as for its tribute to the late Kevin Conroy. It garnered numerous award nominations and won several, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Skarsgård), and Best Supporting Actress for Purnell.

  • misterwolf Plot: In the year 2028, a cruel regime called the Justice Armada has enslaved the world and stolen it’s freedom. It’s leader is the former hero Superman, who was battle-hardened by the death of Lois Lane and his parents. The resistance fighting for the world’s freedom is a revived Justice League, led by Batman.

  • misterwolf During a battle, a mysterious vigilante dressed as a cat arrives and assists the League; they are victorious, and Batman offers her a spot in the team and asks her name. She reveals her name as Helena Kyle, leading Batman to realize that she is the daughter of the late Selina Kyle.

  • misterwolf Raven, Batman’s loyal second-in-command, reads the latter’s mind, and they both deduce that Helena was fathered by him, but knowing that Selina would not wish for Helena to find out unless it is necessary, Batman decides to keep it a secret. As the next battle begins, Superman arrives, but Martian Manhunter stops Batman from fighting, and he decides to fight Superman himself instead. Superman eventually kills Manhunter and heavily injures Lex Luthor.

  • misterwolf The Flash, Batman’s mole in the Justice Armada, uncovers Superman’s plan to destroy cities and reveals them to the League, but his cover is blown after Superman suddenly overhears it. The Flash manages to escape, but was tracked and followed. Luthor is killed instantly by Wonder Woman and the Flash is seriously wounded, but Shazam arrives with Green Lantern, who transports them to Wayne Manor. Alfred, Batman’s butler, gives a final message from Selina to Batman before dying of pneumonia. Selina’s message reveals that she not only forgives him for sending her away, but that it gave her a better chance of raising Helena and that she had actually named her Helena Kyle Wayne.

  • misterwolf Superman arrives with the Armada and destroys Wayne Manor. Raven fights Wonder Woman, who eventually defects after realizing what Superman has become, as does Cyborg. Batman and Superman engage in a violent battle. Batman’s suit proves resistant to Superman’s devastating blows, but he is still eventually defeated even after dealing numerous injuries to Superman despite the suit not taking damage. Batman finally reveals and confirms to Helena that he is her father, and she tearfully reconciles with him.

  • misterwolf Cyborg goes to the Watchtower, intending to destroy it in order to stop Superman from using it to destroy the cities. Superman himself arrives and destroys Cyborg’s teleportation device, but the latter sacrifices himself and destroys the Watchtower with an explosion, enraging Superman. A healed Batman leads a charge against the remainder of the Armada, defeating all of them except for Superman, who engages Batman again. Wonder Woman and Green Lantern are knocked unconscious by reinforcements, while Shazam is killed trying to save Batman.

  • misterwolf While Raven and the Flash are holding off the reinforcements, Helena runs to help Batman. As he and Superman continue fighting, they acknowledge that they wish things remained they were before the war. The Flash saves Batman from falling after Superman throws him, but Superman then snaps the Flash’s neck and kills him. Batman continues to fight Superman and ends up in the Hall of Justice.

  • misterwolf Raven and the surviving Justice League hold off the remaining reinforcements and eventually defeat them, before going to the Hall of Justice with Helena to finish the fight. Batman and Superman acknowledge each other one last time, before Superman suddenly stabs Batman, fatally. His body then fades to dust, but as Batman dies, Superman feels a sharp pain in his abdomen, and discovers that Batman had won regardless by ramming a kryptonite shard in his abdomen, permanently depowering him. Superman reluctantly hands himself in, while Helena breaks down into tears with her father’s mask in her hands, but Raven comforts her before the League departs to rebuild the world and give it back its freedom.

  • misterwolf In the aftermath, the world is finally back to normal, and Helena abandons her Catwoman persona and takes on the identity of “The Huntress”, and becomes Gotham City’s new guardian as the end credits roll.
