Following their return to power in 2021, they established a totalitarian Islamic theocracy, imposing a strict interpretation of Sharia law. While the Taliban's ideology remains its core, its pragmatism in governance reflects a strategic evolution rather than a shift to a Marxist-Leninist system. The government has re-imposed strict Sharia law, cracked down on opposition, former members of the previous government and restricted freedoms. The Taliban has not yet planned a new policy of isolation from the rest of the world at the end of the 2020s.
