Duke and Rex, blood brothers since childhood, lead an elite team to destroy Destro's nanomite weapons lab in Greenland. The mission goes catastrophically wrong when Rex is exposed to the nanomites and horrifically burned. Discharged after disobeying orders to retrieve a sample, Duke watches helplessly as Rex is recruited by Destro, mutated into the super-soldier Cobra, and given command of a gene-doped army. Duke reassembles his team—Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Heavy-Duty, Hi-Tech, Wild Bill, and CIA operative Vanessa Charles—to track Rex to Paraguay, where they uncover Destro's plan to hijack a U.S. weapons ship and unleash the nanomites on America. In a final confrontation, Duke tries to save his friend, but Rex is too far gone. Duke lets him fall, and Rex is buried—only for Cobra's eyes to snap open in his coffin.
