Batman: White Knight

With the DC Extended Universe already struggling, especially after the production of Justice League, Warner Bros. decided to scrap it and start over with a new DC cinematic universe focusing solely on Batman, the most popular and biggest money maker. While the announcement received some disappointment from DC fans, who felt that the character had received enough attention on screen, the pitch from comic creator Sean Murphy, which revolved around a cured Joker seeking to change his public image, sparked a lot of interest from fans. Batman: White Knight was an immediate critical and financial success and was instantly deemed as one of the best Batman stories upon its release.

Superman: The Men of Steel

Superman was in desperate need of a reboot, with concerns that the character was no longer relevant to modern audiences. Enter comic legend Grant Morrison, who had received critical acclaim with the character several times in their career. Morrison's approach was to take Superman to his Golden Age roots, portraying him once again as "the Champion of the Oppressed" even donning a new costume consisting of a t-shirt and jeans. While there was some initial hesitation, over time it became a celebrated take on the character and a welcome return to form.

In this sequel to Batman: The Black Mirror, we learn about the history of Gotham City. In the present day, Batman tries to stop a new villain calling himself the Architect, from destroying famous Gotham landmarks beginning with its bridges. This makes Grayson delve into the city's history through the legacies of the founding families of Gotham.

After Heath Ledger's tragic death, Christopher Nolan made the difficult decision to end his Batman movie series prematurely. Warner Bros., not wanting to be without DC's flagship character, scrambled to come up with something new. Enter Scott Snyder, an up-and-coming comic writer who used his horror experience to give the franchise a new tone. In an even riskier move, the cowl would not be worn by Bruce Wayne but his protege Dick Grayson. While this announcement was met with some cynicism and confusion from casual audiences, it won over the comic book fans. Batman: The Black Mirror was released to positive reception and plans for a brand new Batman trilogy were soon in discussion.

Marvels

After ImageMovers' success with Polar Express and Beowulf, Marvel, who had recently been acquired by Disney approached Robert Zemeckis with a proposal to adapt their landmark miniseries Marvels, hoping that the motion capture technology would be able to adapt Alex Ross's artwork on screen.

Wonder Woman: Gods and Mortals

After John Byrne and Frank Miller's respective reworkings on Superman and Batman, DC hired writer Greg Potter to draft new concepts for Wonder Woman before being joined by joined by fellow writer (and artist) George Pérez. Their take on the character depicted her as an ambassador and emissary to man's world and leaned heavily into her Greek mythology roots. This was once again, a critical and financial success for DC and is widely considered to be the definitive take on the character's mythos.

Batman: Year One

Alec Baldwin's appearance as Batman in The Man of Steel was a highlight for many fans. Therefore, a similar reboot for the character was in order. Frank Miller, who had received critical acclaim for his landmark miniseries The Dark Knight Returns, was contracted to write the origin story. Batman: Year One received universal acclaim with praise directed towards the characterization of Batman and Gordon and the gritty, realistic take on Gotham City.

The Man of Steel

After the disastrous release of Superman III, Warner Bros. decided that Superman needed a reboot. The hiring of comic creator John Byrne, who planned to take the character back to basics, for the project received widespread media coverage. The film received critical and commercial acclaim and is considered by many to be the definitive Superman story. However, some retrospective criticism claims that it didn't understand and discarded the true character.

Batman: Outsiders

Despite the success of their cinematic universe, it was very evident that DC wasn't treating it as a top priority due to the irregular release schedule. Batman: Outsiders, intended for a 2018 release, was pushed back due to other creative projects and was delayed even further due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was announced as the final entry. Planned adaptations for Aquaman and the Flash were shelved and with the announcement of a reboot being helmed by Scott Snyder, it's likely we've seen the end of this franchise.
