The origins of the outbreak is unknown. Those bitten are transformed into zombies after 12 seconds. These zombies are fast moving, intelligent and are dangerous when in groups, as shown when a horde of zombies formed a huge tower to scale the walls surrounding Jerusalem. The zombies acted like the virus themselves, only interested in spreading the infection. Once a zombie has landed a bite on a victim and has passed the infection on, they’ll quickly lose interest in the victim and leave in search of another victim. However, zombies will not infect people who are sick, weak or severely injured. When the zombies overran Jerusalem, they ignored an old man and a sickly young boy. Gerry witnesses this and relays it to the remnants of the World Health Organisation in Cardiff. This allows them to create a vaccination made up of several deactivated viral agents, which acts a camouflage and allows those who received the vaccination to be rendered unseen by the zombies. This allowed humans to regain a foothold on the world, using their newfound camouflage to mount offensives against the zombies and rescue survivors from overrun areas
