Thomson's gazelle is one of the best known species of gazelles. It is named after explorer Joseph Thomson and is sometimes referred to as a "tommie". The Thomson gazelle is named after the explorer Josep Thomson and is sometimes colloquially called “tommie”. Thomson's gazelles are relatively small and slender, making them prime prey for larger animals like lions, leopards, and hyenas. Adult males typically are about 55 to 82 centimeters tall at the shoulder and weigh between 15 and 35 kilograms. Female gazelles are typically smaller and weigh less than the males. And Thomson's gazelle can run up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour!
Grant's gazelles are sometimes confused with Thomson's. However, Thomson's is distinguished from Grant's by its smaller size and the white patch on its rump.
