The IPCRESS File is a 1962 spy novel by Len Deighton (his debut book) featuring an unnamed, working-class British agent who is transferred from military intelligence to a small civilian agency, WOOC(P). The novel centers around a mission to find a missing scientist, codenamed Raven, who has been kidnapped by an intelligence broker known as Jay. The protagonist's investigation leads him into a dangerous conspiracy involving brainwashing and the potential sale of British personnel to the Soviet Union and includes scenes in Lebanon and on an atoll for a United States atomic weapon test, as well as information about Joe One, the Soviet Union's first atomic bomb.
The story was made into a BBC Radio 4 drama in 2004, starring Ian Hart as the unnamed protagonist. There is also a 1965 film and a 2022 TV series, where the mysterious narrator is christened Harry Palmer.
