Thomas James "T.J." Hammond (Portrayed by Sebastian Stan) is one of the main character from the miniseries Political Animals (2012). He is the “openly gay” son of the former president Bud Hammond and Elaine Barrish, and twin brother of Douglas. T.J is a loveable but vulnerable adult who struggled with drug and alcohol abuse with him being on and off the wagon throughout the series. He was once infatuated with Sean Reeves, a closeted US congressman with a wife whom once told T.J he loved him in a flashback scene. T.J aspires to be a club owner and to make his parents as proud of him as they are his twin brother Douglas. In the series despite his parents not trusting him, Douglas decided to invest in his idea for the club and gave him a generous loan. In the middle of the series T.J ends up on Douglas’s doorstep at 3am and bangs on the door asking for help, obviously high and broken his brother gives him a shoulder to cry on. The twins hug and say that they will always be there for each other. In one of the episodes we see a flashback of when T.J tried to commit suicide after his breakup with his secret lover Sean Reeves, by carbon monoxide poisoning as his mother, Elaine finds him inside a car in the garage with the engine running. She luckily was able to get him out and save him. T.J was then hospitalized again toward the end of the series when he relapsed on cocaine and overdosed at his opening night of his new nightclub, where his father Bud Hammond found him unconscious and rushed him to the hospital. T.J later was unconscious for a while and finally woke up and apologized to his parents saying that he wasn’t trying to hurt himself and that he was sorry. T.J moved back in with his mother and grandmother, while his grandmother and Anne cleansed his room of all drugs, while doing this they found a stash of drugs in one of his pillow cases on the chair, his grandmother explained that he was an addict and that they always have a hidden stash. T.J returned home and sober and said jokingly to his brother Douglas that he couldn’t believe he was living with his mother again. The last we see of TJ, he's playing the piano after his brother, Douglas' wedding.
