Vivian Chase grew up in a military family in Toronto.[7][2] Due to a rare autoimmune disease in her childhood, she had life-saving cybernetic replacements.[2] Later, she joined the Canadian military, where she voluntarily received cybernetic upgrades, choosing her abilities to be the most effective fighter she could be.[4] She became a member of the Canadian Special Forces.[1] During the Omnic Crisis, Chase was stationed at Toronto, which came under siege by omnics dispatched from the Detroit omnium. Despite the dire situation, Chase refused to cede the city. However, stemming the invasion required resources, and the only recourse available was Overwatch. When the Overwatch strike team arrived, however, the eclectic group wasn't what she had in mind. Nevertheless, working with the hand she was dealt, she formed an elite fighting force and winning strategy to take the fight to the omnium.[11] Chase and her Special Forces unit worked alongside Overwatch. The latter group was led by Jack Morrison, and the two worked well together in the field. After the war was over, Morrison reached out to Chase for a chance to join Overwatch, to which she agreed.[1]
