This version is a decorated former U.S. Marine, a veteran of the Middle East, and a loving family man before he is exposed to a S.T.A.R. Labs biological weapon designed to absorb energy from anything it touches, which transforms him into a decaying energy vampire. Over the course of the film, he slowly transforms into a massive, near-mindless beast as he continues to absorb energy until Superman eventually appeals to Jones' humanity and the latter sacrifices himself to protect Metropolis from an exploding energy plant.
