Papineau is the apartment building's head custodian, in charge of all the Ground Floor facilities, and takes his job very seriously. He can be recruited as a companion after finding him. If the player only has one or no other party members, he will be in the men's restroom, allowing him to be recruited more easily; otherwise, he is in the locked janitor's closet in the ground floor hall. Papineau starts at level 4, with his class as Janitor. He starts equipped with Joyeuse, a Mackinaw Jacket, Work Boots, and the Arrowed Sash. Papineau comes from an unbroken lineage of janitors. He sees his work as a struggle against the forces of entropy, that will inevitably eventually fail, but which must be maintained as long as possible. He enlists Sam as a deputy janitor to help clear the fleshy barriers that have sealed doors in the building. If Papineau is not recruited before the bus crashes into the ground floor, he may be found dead by Sam later on, presumably killed by the hand monsters that originated from the bus. The player can bring Papineau to the Fungal Lair, where he will recognize many of the people he worked with trapped. He will express grief towards the ones who couldn't be saved in time, as he seems to have been close with the other workers in the apartment building, especially the other janitors.
