Ocean Master (Orm Marius) is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Created by Bob Haney and Nick Cardy, the character first appeared in Aquaman #29 (September 1966).[1] Initially appearing in a one-off story, the character would appear repeatedly throughout the years. Considered one of Aquaman's most recognized villains and archnemesis, the character's depiction and history was changed by DC Comics several times throughout the ages; original appearances during the Silver Age cast him as the ordinary, human half-brother of Aquaman and a sea-faring pirate similar to Black Manta. Following Crisis on Infinite Earths, the character is instead depicted as a Inuit of homo magi descent where Orm is portrayed as a vindictive and envious of his brother plotting to take the throne of Atlantis for himself.[2] Despite these changes, he retains similarities to his previous iteration, having started out as a pirate and embracing lifestyles rejected by his Inuit heritage. Following the New 52 continuity reboot, the character is portrayed as a full-blooded Atlantean of royalty sharing the same mother as Aquaman. Unlike prior depictions, he is depicted as both villain and anti-hero, said to be conflicted with his rivalry with his brother and the safety of their kingdom[3] as well as being prone to engage in criminal activities aimed to punish humans for their callous acts in marine pollution and centuries of Atlantean xenophobia despite being harboring xenophobic tendencies towards humanity.
