Mortimer Brewster is a New York City dramatic critic (and, additionally, an author of "The Bachelor's Bible" in the film version), member of the Brewster family, and fiance (husband in the film version) to Elaine Harper. Upon paying a visit to his elderly maiden Aunts in Brooklyn, he accidentally uncovers a series of murders they have carried out, and seeks to keep them from being discovered.
