Biography

Mikey Waters is a fictional character in Gus Van Sant's film "My Own Private Idaho," portrayed by River Phoenix. He is a sensitive, homeless teenage hustler who suffers from narcolepsy. Mikey is on a quest to find his estranged mother, Sharon Waters, and proclaims himself a "connoisseur of roads" because he has been "tasting roads all his life." His best friend is Scott Favor, a type-A personality hustler from a rich, influential family. Mikey is characterized by his sensitivity and vulnerability. He is deeply affected by his past and seeks love and acceptance. His narcolepsy often causes him to fall asleep suddenly, adding to his sense of instability.
