Melanorosaurus was a large, herbivorous, basal sauropodomorph dinosaur from the Late Triassic period, living in what is now South Africa. Its name means "Black Mountain Lizard," referring to the location of its discovery. With sturdy, pillar-like limbs and a massive body, it was one of the largest land animals of its time, weighing around 1.3 tons and reaching up to 8 meters (26 feet) in length. Melanorosaurus represents an important intermediate form between bipedal sauropod precursors and the later, larger quadrupedal sauropods.
