Marie Marais is a fictional character and the first wife of Allan Quatermain in H. Rider Haggard's 1912 adventure novel Marie. As a young Boer girl of Huguenot descent, she marries Quatermain despite opposition from her anti-English father and a villainous cousin. The story, set during the Great Trek and the Sixth Xhosa War of 1835, features her as a tragic romantic figure, and is referenced many times by Quatermain throughout the series.
