Leptolepis was an extinct genus of herring-like, marine ray-finned fish that lived during the Jurassic period, notable for being one of the earliest true bony fish (teleosts). Its complete bony skeleton and lack of ganoine on its scales made it an efficient swimmer, and the discovery of large bone beds indicates it lived in schools for protection against predators.
