Lea was first introduced in 2000 as a successor to Kira with her darker skinned friend Kayla, who shared a facemold with her. She had a active role in the Barbie line to 2000 to around 2006 when she was phased out, leaving the line without a character of Asian descent. She was reintroduced into the line in 2014 with the reboot of Fashionistas, before being replaced soon by movie character Renee.
