Kala is a fictional and major supporting character from Disney's 1999 animated feature film Tarzan. She is the adoptive mother of the film's title character and the mate and widow of Kerchak.
Kala is calm, gentle, kind, wise, and loving. She loves her son Tarzan unconditionally, although she acknowledged that he wouldn't replace her firstborn son, who was eaten by Sabor. Although she is usually a gentle gorilla, Kala is capable of aggression when necessary, and is also very brave, evidenced when she fights against Sabor in order to protect the baby Tarzan. Kala often disagrees with Kerchak (though both want what is best for the troop), but nevertheless, they love each other, and she grieves for him when he dies. Kala is also sensible and stays sane in the face of everything.
