Corporal Kait Diaz is a former Outsider turned Gear in the COG Army. Daughter to former COG Army Sergeant Gabriel Diaz, and Stranded survivor Reyna Torres, Kait was raised in Fort Umson during the Outsider Movement without the benefits of COG technology due to her parents' deep seeded distrust of the COG, even after it was reestablished following the Locust War. Kait instead received extensive training on how to capably survive Sera's wilderness and live off the land.[2] She was also raised by her uncle, Oscar Diaz, and became close friends with former Gears James Dominic Fenix and Delmont Walker after they went AWOL following the protest massacre in Settlement 2 .[3]
In 42 A.E., an evolved species of the Locust called the Swarm ambushed Fort Umson. All of the villagers except for Kait, JD, Del, and Oscar were taken. While trying to rescue the villagers, Kait and her friends discovered the the villagers were transformed into soldiers for Swarm while Reyna was integrated within a Hive to become their new Queen. Upon her mother's request, Kait disconnected Reyna from the Hive and euthanized her. However, the Swarm's Hivemind began to contact Kait. After remotely controlling a Warden to kill her uncle, Kait went on a mission to uncover her family's origins and prevent her from becoming the Swarm's Queen. Kait discovered her grandmother was Myrrah, whose consciousness was still alive within the Hivemind. After Kait separated herself from the Hivemind, Myrrah possessed Reyna's body and became the Swarm's new Queen.
