Joseph Charles Nemec III (born on November 7, 1948 in Little Rock, Arkansas, United States) is an American art director.
He was a descendant of Bohemian immigrants studied architecture at the University of Arkansas and subsequently worked as a set designer for television in the 1970s. In 1980, under the direction of John W. Corso, he was involved in the set design of a feature film for the first time, the musical Xanadu. This was followed by assistant production design work on several films, including the Steven Spielberg productions The Goonies and The Color Purple. From the mid-1980s onward, Nemec worked regularly as chief architect for Hollywood film productions.
From the mid-1980s onward, Nemec worked regularly as chief set designer for Hollywood film productions. In 1988/89, he was responsible for the set design of the television series Christine Cromwell. In film, action and special effects films emerged as Nemec's main area of expertise; "he has only been able to unleash more imagination in the Western 'Wild Bill' and the comic-strip-style adventure story set in the 1930s, 'Shadow and the Curse of the Khan'." In 1989, he had a small cameo in James Cameron's 'The Abyss'. At the beginning of the 21st century, Nemec also designed sets for horror, historical, and science fiction films, but also sporadically returned to television productions.
