Captain Hector Barbossa is a main character in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, first appearing as the main antagonist of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. An intelligent, yet ruthless Pirate Lord, Barbossa once served as first mate to Captain Jack Sparrow aboard the Black Pearl, only to usurp Sparrow’s position as captain and seize control of the brig and its crew. Barbossa was typically accompanied by his foul-tempered pet monkey, Jack—a mocking tribute to the disgraced captain.
After leading the mutiny against Jack, Captain Barbossa and his crew fell under cursed treasure and spent ten years lifting the curse, leading to his death by Sparrow. Resurrected by the mystic Tia Dalma, Barbossa summoned the Brethren Court to battle Lord Cutler Beckett and the legendary sailor Davy Jones. Hector later lost his leg and the Black Pearl. Now serving as a privateer and commanding the HMS Providence, Barbossa claims to owe his allegiance to King George II, but after an uneasy alliance with Jack Sparrow, Barbossa reveals it is revenge on Blackbeard rather than valor that pushes the navy captain toward the Fountain. During the quest for the Trident of Poseidon, Hector Barbossa sacrificed himself to save his daughter, Carina Smyth, from Captain Salazar.
