Djakapurra distinguished himself at a young age as a yiḏaki player, earning the right to play in ceremony and also one of his names, Ganbulapula, relating to the story of the first Yirritja moiety yiḏaki. He has also distinguished himself as a dancer, performing with and acting as Yolngu consultant for Bangarra Dance Theatre, Australia’s premier indigenous modern dance company. He was the featured Aboriginal performer at the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. He performed at the 2006 Dreaming festival in Woodford, Queensland, before flying off to sing and dance at the opening of the Musee du Quai Branli in Paris. Due to all this, Djakapurra ofen lives and works away from home in Sydney or Darwin, but stays at his clan homeland of Dhälinybuy when he is in Arnhem Land.
