A catgirl is a fictional stock character popularized from Japanese entertainment in manga and anime, usually female with feline traits and characteristics, such as cat ears and a tail, or sometimes others (i.e., claws, etc.) on an otherwise human body derived from another folkloric creature known as the werecat. Catgirls are female kemonomimi that are not individuals who are literal cats, but those who only look superficially feline via ailuranthropy and are found in various genres of fiction outside the Japanese entertainment industry. The oldest mention of catgirls, otherwise known in Japan as nekomusume comes from an 18th Century misemono in which a cat/woman hybrid was displayed. Stories of shapeshifting bakeneko prostitutes were popular during the Edo Period where the popularity of the nekomusume continued throughout both the Edo and Shōwa Periods, with many tales of cat/woman hybrids appearing in works such as the Ehon Sayoshigure and Ansei zakki.
