Assassins is a controversial one-act musical written by John Weidman, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It details the lives, motivations, and downfalls of nine different men and women who assassinated the President of the United States (John Wilkes Booth, Charles J. Guiteau, Leon Czolgosz, and Lee Harvey Oswald) or at least attempted to (Giuseppe Zangara, Samuel Byck, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, Sara Jane Moore, and John Hinckley, Jr.) The musical explores the dark side of the American dream and what drives a person to choose such a dark path in order to pursue it. Assassins originally premiered Off-Broadway in 1990, but later received a revival on Broadway in 2004, then an off-Broadway revival in 2022.
