Arthropleura (Greek for jointed ribs) is a genus of extinct millipede-type arthropods that lived in what is now northeastern North America and Scotland around 345 to 295 million years ago, from the Viséan stage of the lower Carboniferous Period to the Asselian stage of the lower Permian Period. The species of the genus are the largest known land invertebrates of all time, and would have had few, if any, predators. Arthropleura was practically blind but had a good sense of smell and touch through which to detect other animals. It is possible that while Arthropleura was a timid creature, it could have shown to be highly aggressive, if it was easily provoked into attacking. Arthropleura most likely ate vegetation Feeding on plants that grow on forest floors, like ferns.
