Earl Hunsaker is a private eye that specializes in cracking cold cases wide open. But what he doesn't advertise is that he has the power to step into the past and back into the present, a gift he uses to start an investigation when the trail is hot. But if anyone discovers his secret in the past or he dies, then he's flung back to where he started, unable to go back even if he wanted to. When the remains of a city councilman's illegitimate daughter washes up on the beach, Hunsaker travels back to the time of her disappearance: 1935 San Francisco.
