  • Plot: Every 500 years, a tournament known as Mortal Kombat has doomed Earthrealm; if it loses the ninth, the cruel emperor Shao Kahn will be one step closer to conquering it. Shao Kahn's servant, Shang Tsung, invites martial arts warriors to the ninth tournament, including thunder god Raiden, Shaolin monks Liu Kang and Kung Lao, Hollywood superstar Johnny Cage, and special forces officer Sonya Blade.
  • The sorcerer chooses Cage as the first combatant, and his opponent is Sektor. Cage defeats Sektor, and the sorcerer announces that the tournament will resume at dawn. Raiden himself advises Cage to take matters more seriously, before Cage tails Sonya, who attacks him. He defeats her, and convinces her to let him help find her superior, Jackson Briggs.
  • Raiden is confronted by the Elder Gods, who tell him that he participated in the tournament against their wishes. He refuses to back out, as he cannot let Earthrealm lose another tournament, and the Elder Gods reluctantly allow him to stay. Meanwhile, Cage and Sonya find Jax in a cell, and Shang Tsung, who took Jax's arms, appears and commences a challenge; Sonya faces Sub-Zero, of the Lin Kuei clan, and defeats him. She and Cage free Jax and escape the cell block with the help of Raiden. Jax is given metal arms, while Scorpion is chosen as the next combatant.
  • Scorpion faces Kung Lao, and he defeats him, but demands Sub-Zero. Shang Tsung allows Sub-Zero to be his last opponent, before Cyrax and Sektor challenge Scorpion in Shang Tsung's house. He defeats them, then faces Sub-Zero in the Netherealm, the place where he was reborn. He defeats him, but refuses to kill him, as he realizes that he did not kill his family and his clan, the Shirai Ryu. He turns on Shang Tsung, who is the true culprit in the killings.
  • Liu Kang is chosen as the final combatant in the tournament, and faces its champion, Goro. He defeats Goro, before battling the sorcerer himself. Liu Kang knocks Shang Tsung unconscious, and Earthrealm is supposedly saved. Raiden has a vision, involving him fighting Shao Kahn, but is concerned about the words "He must win!". He also takes note of his amulet, which was forged by the Elder Gods, being damaged, indicating that the tenth tournament will begin soon.
  • Shao Kahn executes Shang Tsung due to Earthrealm winning the tournament for the first time. He violates the rules of Mortal Kombat and invades Earthrealm, tired of waiting 500 more years, explaining that the tenth tournament will not follow the rules. Liu Kang meets Shao Kahn's supposed daughter, Kitana, and they unknowingly fall for each other. Raiden speaks with the Elder Gods, who refuse to intervene. Scorpion joins the warriors in the fight against Shao Kahn, and Kitana betrays the emperor as her real father was killed by him.
  • Sub-Zero also joins Raiden, and he settles his differences with Scorpion. Raiden forms their headquarters at his Sky Temple, and teaches Kitana to overcome her aggressive behavior. Meanwhile, Cage, Sonya, Kung Lao and Jax battle the Outworlders; Shao Kahn himself appears and kills Kung Lao by snapping his neck. Cage and Jax carry Kung Lao's lifeless body back to the temple, during which Liu Kang blames the increasingly furious Raiden for the death of his friend.
  • Liu Kang attacks Raiden, who accidentally kills him. Kitana tells Liu Kang that she loves him, before he dies in her arms. She does not blame Raiden for this, as he did not mean to kill Liu Kang; Shao Kahn appears, with a cyber-formed Cyrax and Sektor. Cyrax however, betrays the emperor and kills Sektor after he tries to capture Sub-Zero, before being killed himself. Raiden, after being severely beaten by Shao Kahn, regains his strength and fights Shao Kahn in a final showdown.
  • Kitana and the surviving warriors battle Goro, who kills Jax. Sonya almost meets the same fate, before Kitana saves her and beheads Goro with her fan blades. Raiden continues to fight the increasingly wounded Shai Kahn, and eventually destroys him with his lighting. Shao Kahn disintegrates, and Earthrealm is free of him forever.
  • In the aftermath, Raiden tends to the wounded, and Cage confesses his feelings for Sonya. She confesses the same, and they accept their fate. Kitana decides to stay with Raiden, who vows to protect Earthrealm from new evils as the end credits roll.
