Laughing Jack is a 2022 American supernatural horror film based on the creepypasta character of the same name. The film was directed by John Carpenter, who had also directed Mister Widemouth in 2021, a prequel to Eyeless Jack and the sixth installment in the creepypasta universe. It stars Millie Bobby Brown as Abby Elliot, Jared Leto as Laughing Jack, and Keegan-Michael Key as Agent Rowland, with Donald Glover, James McAvoy, and Eric Roberts. Set in 1995, a mysterious murdering clown is stalking a neighborhood in Los Angeles, killing children by cutting them open and replacing their organs with candy. A rookie detective is sent to investigate the killings. Laughing Jack was released theatrically on January 5th 2022. It was a modest success and earned $189 million worldwide, but received mixed-to-negative reviews, with praise for its atmosphere, direction, and Brown's performance, but it was criticized for not having a PG-13 rating compared to Eyeless Jack, along with the plot, screenplay, cinematography and graphic violence. Despite its success, it is the poorest-performing film in the creepypasta universe to-date, with Warner Bros. claiming it was a failure, canceling Carpenter's planned sequel resolving around the Toymaker. This caused the latter to have a pay dispute with the studio. As a result, the rights of the creepypasta universe were taken from Warner Bros. by Paramount Pictures, who hired Carpenter to direct The Toymaker, which was released on March 22nd, 2024.
