A headless ghost or spirit, often appearing on horseback. They sometimes carry their head tucked underneath their arm and are said to be an omen of death. They originated in Irish folklore, but became even more well-known after the Headless Horseman gained popularity due to the publication of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving.
