  • accaffrey In a small, woodsy town, a cocky hunter named Rod is brutally mauled to death by a wolf while out at night. Another hunter in the town named Dougie Lloyd, known for always bringing back the largest prey he can find, volunteers to start a "vigilante" group of hunters to track and kill the wolf. He is joined by Rod's revenge-seeking brother Marlon, and a couple of other local hunters (Bruce Grundy among them). Their first attempt goes terribly wrong, losing one hunter and the putting the other in critical condition. They realize they'll need better weapons, so they head to the local gunsmith to buy a couple of heavy-duty rifles. The decrepit old man at the store gives them a frightening word of warning, but they disregard him. Later that day, while looking for a wolf den, they get word that there is no longer any sign of injury on their hunter that was in the hospital. This is strange, considering the severity of his wound the night before. Before nightfall, they hold a town meeting where they warn everyone not to go out when it gets dark. Dougie and Marlon briefly tell of their hunt for the wolf, and the danger involved. Just then, a well-dressed man stands up. He says his name is Archie, and that he is a biologist who specializes in wolves, and that he would like to help. The hunters disregard him at first, but he eventually convinces them when he leads them to the wolf den. As it begins to get dark, a nurse runs to the group and alerts them that the hunter whose wounds were healed is gone. They put the wolf hunt on hold and go searching for their teammate. Bruce stumbles upon a gypsy camp, and figures he'll ask if they've seen him. A very old gypsy who calls himself Hugo invites Bruce into his tent. He closes his eyes and traces Bruce's palm. He grimaces, and tells Bruce that the wolf they are hunting is a werewolf, and their fellow hunter has become one. It is just then Bruce realizes its a full moon. Suddenly, a wolf howls. Dougie, Marlon, and the others don't hear it as they look for clues inside the hospital. Hugo tells Bruce to go see a man named Richardson immediately, and to ask him what he knows. Bruce obeys, and asks the half-drunken Richardson for his story. Richardson claims he was a gravedigger and was attacked by a humanoid werewolf in the middle of the night. Everyone thought he was dead until he woke up the next day, still lying in the woods. He believes that it must have been the fabric that saved him, as no one else was wearing it and they all were slaughtered. He tells Bruce to be careful, and then ushers him out. Bruce does not tell the others, but he now feels determined to kill the wolf once and for all. The following night, everybody makes their way into the woods (still no sign of the other hunter). Archie is telling them an interesting fact about wolves when out of the blue, a vicious and red-eyed one jumps from behind a bushes and begins attacking the biologist. Marlon attempts to fight him off, but by the time the wolf is dead, so is Archie. The other hunters begin to get spooked, and run back into town. But as they go, other wolves appear from the bushes and trees, mauling them as well. Dougie, Bruce, and Marlon run in the other direction. Unfortunately, as they get further away, Marlon reveals he has a bloody and gaping wound in his stomach from when he tried to save Archie. He collapses, dead. Dougie and Bruce are starting to worry. Dougie suggests they split up. Although Bruce advises against it, Dougie has made up his mind. Bruce, before they split up, begins to tell Dougie something. But he is interrupted when Dougie takes a shot at the pack of wolves that's caught up with them. He yells for Bruce to get away, which he does as Dougie is left to die painfully behind him. He ducks behind a tree, but notices a wolf staring right back at him. It lunges, and the film ends with Bruce's piercing scream. In an end credits sequence, Bruce wakes up, midmorning. He sits up, and pulls a piece of Richardson's fabric from where he was bitten. He stumbles back into town, passing many mauled bodies on the way. As soon as he gets to town, he is horrified to find that everyone seems to be dead, and the werewolves have begun their takeover.
