Synopsis

City of Darkness is a 2022 American science fiction action film written, co-produced, and directed by Denis Villeneuve. It stars Anne Hathaway, Tom Hiddleston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Sharlto Copley, Alexa Davalos, Morgan Freeman, Amy Adams, Alexandra Shipp, and Michael Caine. In the film, a former scientist-turned-assassin named Dakota Houston sets out to give the world back its freedom, which was taken by the ruthless and corrupt world leader Armando Kraone. City of Darkness premiered in Los Angeles on February 29th, 2022, and was released on March 17th; it was a major box-office success, grossing $618 million worldwide. The film was met with widespread acclaim from critics, who praised its ambition, direction, musical score, action sequences, the dark tone, dramatic characters, visual effects, emotion, and Hathaway, Hiddleston, Abdul-Mateen, Copley, Davalos and Caine's performances, as well as for its groundbreaking storytelling. It is widely considered one of the greatest science fiction films of all time, as well as one of Villeneuve's finest works, and is considered to be his masterpiece. In 2027, City of Darkness was selected by the United States National Film Board as one of the top ten best films of 2022.

  • misterwolf Plot: Dakota is a troubled young woman who lives with her caring mother, Kat, and her younger sister, Emma. Dakota and her fiancée Ryan arrive at Armando Kraone's speech, announcing his election as the High Minister; he vows to change the ways of the world, indicating that he wishes to control the human race. Dakota and her entire family do not support this, and they deduce that the men who elected Kraone are almost as corrupt as he is. They vow to stop them and cease their assets completely in order to prevent slavery across the world.

  • misterwolf Fifteen years later, Dakota, now an assassin and fugitive, has supposedly witnessed her entire family being arrested by the government for refusing to support Kraone. Ryan, revealed to be the only one who was arrested (to protect Dakota's family), escapes from his imprisonment and sets out to Arizona, where Dakota is currently hiding. He tells her that her family is not imprisoned, but rather, he had told them to go to the country of Australia; however, Armando hacks into their comms and overhears this, sending separate teams, one to retrieve Dakota and Ryan, the other to Kat and Emma. Dakota, who is highly trained in the use of martial arts and firearms, defeats one of the teams, and she and Ryan set out to Australia.

  • misterwolf The other team locates Kat and Emma, but Kat is already aware; just as Dakota and Ryan arrive, the team attempts to arrest them, but Kat saves them and kills the team. She and Emma tell Dakota that Kraone will do anything to make the world in his image. An angered Kraone doubles the bounty on Dakota and excommunicates her before setting a bounty on Kat and Emma as well.

  • misterwolf Dakota finds council advisor Winston Orlando, who does not support Kraone. He provides her with the list of politicians that must die: Kurt Graham, Martin Frank, Hugh Michaels, Richard Wayans, and lastly, Kraone himself. She accepts the mission, knowing that it will prevent slavery.

  • misterwolf Dakota kills Graham and Frank, before running into their servants Danny Traeger and Willard Drake. They join her after she tells them they are not slaves anymore. She attempts to track Michaels, but he has a signal jammer, preventing her tracking device from locating him. Wayans informs Kraone that Graham and Frank are dead, and the latter deduces that it was Dakota. During a statement, Dakota assassinates Wayans while he announces that Kraone will avenge Graham and Frank. Angered by Wayans' death, Kraone discovers that Orlando has betrayed him and has him arrested.

  • misterwolf Ryan breaks Orlando free, while Kat forges an alliance with high-ranking council member Peter Davis, who dislikes Kraone due to his desire for power. Willard's sister, Wynonna, the deputy mayor of Arizona, provides information to Dakota regarding how to ignore Michaels' signal jammer, before setting out to Phoenix; she locates Michaels, but before killing him, he reveals that the men who elected Kraone were him, Graham, Frank, and Wayans. She shoots him dead.

  • misterwolf Kraone kidnaps Emma and threatens to kill her if Dakota does not set out to Washington DC. Dakota goes there and enters Kraone's tower. She kills many of Kraone's men before they meet face-to-face. He tries coercing her to join him, but she resists and they both fight; Ryan is presumably shot fatally when he intervenes, while Danny and Willard are knocked unconscious. Enraged, Dakota brutalizes Kraone, but initially hesitates to kill him. He reveals that he killed her father, which then causes her to shoot him in the torso and kill him instantly.

  • misterwolf Dakota rescues Emma before Ryan, having survived via a bullet proof vest, awakens. An emotional Dakota reconciles with her family, and she vows to fight the corrupt should they rise again as the end credits roll.
