It is the early 1990s. Kyo Kusanagi, a formerly delinquent high school student, sets up shop at the City of Southtown (Long Beach, California) with the help of his friends (Benimaru, Daimon, Yuri, Mai, King, Terry, Andy, and Joe). They form a unified, eclectic martial arts gang called "The Children of Southtown" and open a club called "The Flaming Sun" at the heart of the coastal area. A rogue naval captain named Rugal Bernstein steals a US Navy aircraft carrier and threatens world domination through use of such a weapon. Yuri is the daughter of Takuma Sakazaki, a sushi-and-ramen restaurateur and reputable master of the Kyokugen style of Karate. She is also the closest childhood friend of Kyo Kusanagi, as they were born in the same hospital five days apart (her being older than him a bit) and their fathers have been best friends all the way back from their time living in Osaka, Japan.
