At her request, the Maunts bury her in their crypt alive with only a few candles and some wine. She's eventually forgotten, but not by all. The Witch of Oz
It follows the adventures of Theodore, an orphan boy living out in the gray prairies of Kansas with his Uncle Emil, his Aunt Henrietta and his dog Toto. One day, After Emil and Henrietta leave Theodore and Toto alone in order to travel into town. A tornado appears, uproots the farmhouse, with Theodore and Toto inside, and transports it to the Land of Oz.

Oatsie Manglehand, a woman who leads the Grasstrail Train, discovers the body of a young man, badly bruised and near death, by the side of a road in the Vinkus. The Vinkus has lately become dangerous due to "scrapings", mysterious killings that involve the removal of the head's facial features, but this man's face has not been scraped. Oatsie brings the man to the Cloister of St. Glinda in the Shale Shallows. The Superior Maunt recognizes the young man and identifies him as Liir, the young boy who left the Cloister with Elphaba a decade or so prior.

Elphaba is born to Melena Thropp, the granddaughter of the Eminent Thropp of Munchkinland, and Frexspar the Godly, an itinerant unionist minister. Frex is the son of a seventh son, and the seventh pastor in his family. Because Melena married lower than her family's social standing, she is unhappy in her marriage and is known to have many other men in her life. Though it does not become clear until much later, Melena is at some point approached by a mysterious stranger, who gives her a potion called "Miracle Elixir" from a green bottle. He seduces her and nine months later she gives birth to a child, Elphaba Thropp, inside a device called The Clock of the Time Dragon (a prophetic enchanted tik-tok device), as her husband is attacked by a lynch mob to another location.
