Cyclops builds the Danger Room to strengthen the team, but clashes with Wolverine, who believes Cyclops is compromised by grief. Meanwhile, Magneto reassembles the Brotherhood of Mutants with new members. Jean returns with enhanced abilities and rejects rejoining the X-Men, opting to protect mutants on her own terms. Magneto manipulates her emotions through telepath Emma Frost, prompting Cyclops and Wolverine to unite and lead the team in a mission to rescue her.

Together, the newly formed X-Force travel back in time to save Jean Grey before the Phoenix takes over. However, Apocalypse is aware of their secret plan and forms their own plans to prevent this from happening...
