Biography
Andreja Pejić (pronunciation:/ənˈdreɪjə pɛˈdʒiːk/ ou/peɪˈdʒiːk/Tuzla, August 28, 1991) is an Australian actress and model of Bosnian Croat and Bosnian Serb ethnicity. Pejić is a transgender woman, who until 2014 was known as an androgynous model who described herself as "living between the genders". She is mainly known for her roles in Dalíland (2022), Other Me (2022), Habit (2021), The Girl in the Spider's Wab (2018).
Pejić was born in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and has an older brother, Igor. Pejic's mother, Jadranka Savić (Јадранка Савић), was born in Serbian Bosnia, and Pejić's father, Vlado Pejić, in Croatian Bosnia. The couple divorced shortly after Pejić's birth. During the Bosnian War, Pejić and Igor fled to Serbia with his mother and grandmother to a refugee camp in Belgrade. After that, the family moved to Vojska, a village near Svilajnac.
After the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, Pejić's mother felt they were in danger and so decided to try to emigrate to Australia. In 2000, when Pejić was eight years old, his family moved to Melbourne as political refugees.
While studying at University High, Pejić was described as being "academically brilliant".
Pejić was reportedly approached to model before her 17th birthday, while she was still working at McDonald's.
Pejić was initially notable for modeling both menswear and womenswear. At the January 2011 Paris Fashion shows, Pejić modeled both menswear and womenswear for Jean-Paul Gaultier, and menswear for Marc Jacobs. In May 2011, Pejić was featured on the cover of Dossier Jornal magazine—on the cover, Pejić is shown taking off her shirt and wearing curlers—but was censored by American bookstores Barnes & Noble and Borders, which covered the image with an opaque cloth. Concern was expressed that readers might think Andreja was a topless woman.
At Stylenite in July 2011, Pejić appeared on the runway modeling both menswear and womenswear for the Michalsky label. The following year, she modeled wedding creations by Spanish designer Rosa Clara at Barcelona Bridal Week 2013.
In 2011, Pejic was ranked 18th on themodels.com's ranking of the 50 top male models, was named "one of the most influential people" by Out magazine in 2011, and was also named 98th Sexiest Woman by FHM magazine in 2011—an award that was criticized for its hostile tone toward transgender people, especially trans women. The magazine referred to Pejic as a "thing" and commented "give us the barf bag" when suggesting that she might be a Vogue model in the future. FHM magazine later retracted the article and issued an apology.
On August 6, 2012, Pejic was a judge on Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model.
In 2013, Pejić appeared alongside Iselin Steiro, Saskia de Brauw, Tilda Swinton and David Bowie in the video for Bowie's single "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)". In early 2014, Pejić underwent sex reassignment surgery. In July, she spoke about her identity as a transgender woman to an interviewer for People magazine. In September 2014, Pejić announced plans to launch a fundraising project to create a film about herself and her life, with a particular focus on her experience as a transgender woman. An attempt to raise $200,000 for the project was unsuccessful. Pejić tried again with a more modest goal of $40,000, which she met and then exceeded.
