In the aftermath of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the world learns that mutants exist after Jean Grey uses her psychic powers to freeze an entire section of New York. Although Jean ultimately chooses compassion over revenge, the public knows nothing about her trauma or what led to the incident. Her actions become the pretext for a growing anti-mutant movement. Sensing Jean's immense potential, Charles Xavier contacts her telepathically and invites her to his school for gifted mutants. There, Jean meets Scott Summers, Storm, Beast, Rogue, Nightcrawler, and Iceman. Xavier wants the school to be a sanctuary where young mutants can learn to control their abilities and overcome their fears, not a military academy. But as anti-mutant hatred grows, Jean believes they should become public heroes who protect mutants and humans alike, inspired by the way Spider-Man once helped her. Meanwhile, geneticist Nathaniel Essex, secretly known as Mr. Sinister, has spent centuries experimenting on mutants in an attempt to accelerate their evolution. Believing trauma makes mutants stronger, he manipulates the growing anti-mutant conflict and uses his influence through the Hellfire Club and Damage Control to capture mutants for his experiments. He becomes obsessed with Jean and Scott, believing their combined genetics could create the ultimate mutant. His plans also draw in Emma Frost, a powerful telepath who initially works with Essex but eventually turns against him. When Rogue, another traumatized mutant who has hurt people because she cannot control her powers, falls under Essex's influence, Jean recognizes her own past in Rogue and helps her find redemption. In the final battle, Jean, Scott, and the other students unite with Emma to defeat Sinister. Having chosen hope over anger, the students officially become the X-Men, transforming Xavier's school from a hidden sanctuary into a symbol of hope for mutants and humans alike.
