Following the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the world discovers that mutants exist after Jean Grey's devastating display of psychic power becomes international news. Damage Control uses the incident to fuel fear and suspicion toward mutants, secretly rounding them up for the mysterious geneticist Nathaniel Essex, aka Mr. Sinister. Meanwhile, Charles Xavier has established a secluded school for young mutants, where Jean joins Scott Summers, Hank McCoy, Bobby Drake, Ororo Munroe, and other students learning to control their powers and cope with the trauma of being different. Jean quickly becomes a mentor to the troubled Rogue, recognizing the same loneliness and anger she once experienced herself. As Jean and Scott grow closer, she begins to understand that the lesson Spider-Man taught her—that people don't have to be defined by their worst moments—could help an entire generation of mutants. When Jean discovers that Essex has been manipulating mutant persecution and experimenting on mutants for centuries in an attempt to artificially accelerate evolution, Xavier's students are forced to confront him. Essex is particularly obsessed with Jean and Scott, believing their combined genetics could create the ultimate mutant. Xavier initially refuses to turn his students into soldiers, but Jean convinces him that mutants need heroes who can protect humans and mutants alike. Under Scott's leadership, Jean, Scott, Storm, Beast, Iceman, Rogue, and Emma Frost unite as the first X-Men. In the final battle, Jean rejects Essex's belief that suffering creates strength, realizing that her true power came from the people who reached out to her when she was alone. After defeating Essex and exposing his experiments, the X-Men publicly reveal themselves—not as an army against humanity, but as a family determined to prove that mutants and humans can coexist.
