  • marcusellison In the movie’s climax, D’ken storms the Shi’ar Vault with the Imperial Guard to retrieve the M’kraan Crystal only to be intercepted by the X-Men (Wolverine, Bishop, Colossus, Shadowcat, Akihiro, Armor, Sunspot, Gambit & Rogue) along with Lilandra, Gladiator, Sybill & Flashfire; elsewhere Cyclops, Cable & Havoc arrive at The Far Shore to confront Jean. In the ensuing fight, the Imperial Guard can hold off the X-Men long enough for D’ken to retrieve the crystal and teleport himself, Delphos & Erik to The Far Shore where he plans to destroy the Phoenix. Upon arriving Scott, Cable & Havoc find Jean in a chrysalis-like state and try to snap her out of it but to no avail. Not long after D’ken (along with The Reds) arrive and the Summers family prepare for what could be their final stand to protect Jean. They’re ultimately overpowered, with Cable being mortally wounded, and D’ken begins to absorb the cosmic energy of the M’kraan Crystal; but in a last-ditch effort to thwart him Scott shoots the crystal with an optic blast, shattering it. The explosion of raw energy from the damaged crystal vaporizes everything in the vicinity and Scott wakes up in an all-white void with Cable & Havoc where he sees Jean. She tells him that she used what was left of her consciousness to save him, Havoc & Cable but that she’s losing herself rapidly and that Phoenix intends to wipe out this galaxy and start anew. After it becomes clear that there’s no way to save her, Scott & Jean share an intimate goodbye with Jean thanking him for being her one true constant and promising that “a piece of her will always live on within him”. Upon being released from the void, Scott picks up a shard of the M’kraan Crystal and stabs Jean with it before removing his visor, tearfully saying “I love you” and releasing an immense optic blast that destroys Jean’s body with The Phoenix locked inside of it. In the wake of the tragedy, the Summers trio travel back to the Shi’ar Empire to pay their respects to Majestrix Lilandra (the new Queen of the Shi’ar Empire) before returning back to Earth with the rest of the X-Men. Not long after their return, Scott meets with Bolivar Trask to resume talks of mutant autonomy which resulted in the establishment of Genosha (which resides on Krakoa). A grand funeral is held on Genosha for Jean Grey on the same day that the new Xavier/Lehnsherr Institute is opened. Storm serves as the new school’s headmaster (with Colossus, Iceman, Emma Frost, Shadowcat, Forge & Wolverine serving as instructors); Cable starts up X-Force (with Domino, Akihiro, Sunspot, Bishop, Havoc, Nightcrawler, Gambit & Rogue); Beast serves on the new government council as the mutant ambassador; and Scott overseeing Genosha as the first appointed Prime Minister. As the film draws to a close, Scott stands atop Genosha looking off into the distance as a slight flicker of fire passes over his red glasses and he smiles.
