In the wake of Professor Xavier’s darkest secrets coming to light, the X-Men are left fractured and reeling after discovering that Xavier mind-wiped Cyclops to cover up the tragic, failed rescue mission that seemingly killed Gabriel Summers, Scott’s long-lost brother known as Vulcan. However, Vulcan survived, and driven by immense power and unresolved trauma, he flees into deep space, intent on destroying the alien Shi’ar Empire, whom he holds responsible for his mother’s death. Realizing the apocalyptic threat Vulcan poses to the cosmos, a disgraced Professor X joins Cyclops, Havok, Marvel Girl, Nightcrawler, Warpath, and Darwin on an interstellar pursuit into the heart of the galaxy. Their mission leads them into the middle of a brutal galactic civil war, forcing the mutants to team up with the Starjammers, a band of space pirates led by Scott and Alex’s estranged father, Corsair. Together with the deposed Shi'ar Empress Lilandra, the X-Men clash with the formidable Imperial Guard while attempting to reach the mad former Emperor D’Ken, who intends to harness the reality-warping power of the M’Kraan Crystal to achieve total dominance. In a explosive final confrontation at the Crystal, Vulcan slays D’Ken and seizes control, declaring himself the absolute ruler of the entire Shi'ar Empire. Driven past the point of redemption, Vulcan murders his own father, Corsair, right before Cyclops’ eyes. Defeated, heartbroken, and unable to stop Vulcan’s ascent to the imperial throne, the surviving X-Men are forced to make a desperate escape back to Earth. Stranded without their mentor, grieving the tragic death of Corsair, and leaving Vulcan in command of an aggressive alien armada, the team returns home completely broken, with their fundamental trust in Xavier’s dream permanently shattered as they prepare for an uncertain future.
