Jaded novelist Ellis Kane, targeted by a viral cancel culture campaign for his provocative twitter posts, is invited to a sinister “rehabilitation retreat” in the Mojave Desert. Run by the cult-like Collective, the retreat forces attendees into absurd rituals of apology and compliance. With the help of Jax, a rebellious young hacker, Ellis uncovers the Collective’s scheme to profit from outrage. Their defiant rebellion against the retreat’s “purification ceremony” sparks a viral backlash, leaving Ellis both ostracized and liberated as he returns to writing in a fractured, dogmatic world. : The entire narrative hinges on Ellis’s cancellation, portraying it as an overblown, absurd punishment for thought-crimes. The Collective’s rituals (e.g., forcing attendees to rewrite their past work to be “inclusive”) mock the excesses of moral policing. Cancel Culture as Tyranny: The Collective satirizes mob outrage as a tool for control, echoing Ellis’s critique of dogmatic groupthink stifling dissent.
