Ace’s story kicks off in the dusty courtyards of Owanabouga, where he scrubs the royal family’s boots day in and day out just to keep food on his little sister O’Shana’s plate. He’s a straight-up peasant with more heart than coin, praying every dawn for strength and provision. Then the kingdom’s girls start vanishing—and when O’Shana disappears too, Ace realizes this isn’t some natural disaster but a cruel abduction ordered by King O’Bennan across the border in Pimos. With tears in his eyes and faith on his lips, Ace throws himself at the mercy of King Owana and Queen Victoria, begging them to declare war. They blow him off as a whining commoner, but Princess Shana—who’s got a soft spot for underdogs and a Bible always tucked under her arm—demands action. Soon the kingdom’s banners are raised, and Ace fights alongside General Jack and the ruthless Colonel Spade, hell-bent on rescuing every captive soul taken by Pimos’s forces. The battlefield at Oakland Hayes tastes of iron and regret, and Ace’s courage is tested by visions of dead parents urging him to keep the faith. Meanwhile, deep in Pimos’s dungeons, O’Shana and a pregnant prisoner named Lucero cling to each other and their prayers, refusing to let despair win. Back home, Shana uncovers a bitter history of royal betrayal that set O’Bennan on this path of vengeance—revealing the war’s twisted roots.
