In 1963, democrat, George Wallace, became the the Governor of the great state of Alabama. "In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever." He pushed Alabama into a state of separation and discrimination. He didn't want to lose his country to Martin Luther King. He didn't want to lose his country to the black. They fought back, and they won.
