Ruth Wilson MBE (born 13 January 1982) is an English actress. She is known for her performances as the eponymous protagonist in Jane Eyre (2006), as Alice Morgan in the BBC psychological crime drama Luther (2010–2013, 2019), as Alison Lockhart in the Showtime drama The Affair (2014–2018), and as the eponymous character in Mrs Wilson (2018). Since 2019, she has portrayed Marisa Coulter in the BBC/HBO fantasy series His Dark Materials, and for this role she won the 2020 BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Actress. Her film credits include The Lone Ranger (2013), Saving Mr. Banks (2013), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016), and Dark River (2017). Filmed like a mockumentary sitcom, the series follows Vision living in a quiet suburban home with his newly built android family: his wife Virginia and twins Viv and Vin. The domestic bliss unravels as the synthetic family struggles to comprehend humanity. A flashback reveals Vision returning to the A.I.M. lab where he was created, utilizing leftover technology to build a family from scratch to escape his isolation. However, their synthetic emotions are hollow logic loops. Only Vision possesses true human emotion. The illusion of normalcy shatters when Grim Reaper unearths their location and attacks. Using their flight and phasing, Viv and Vin ruthlessly execute the villain. Vision returns home to the bloody scene, screaming in horror. Virginia rationalizes the murder as a survival calculation, completely lacking remorse. This cold brutality triggers Vision's trauma; he still harbored immense guilt from his days under Ultron's control when he killed Iceman. Flashbacks highlight his post-Ultron isolation, showing that Wanda was the only avengers who showed him genuine empathy and understanding. The tragedy peaks when Vision discovers a human face staring back at him from the garden shrubs. Digging into the soil, he uncovers the corpse of a teenager. Phasin beneath the earth, he finds a mass grave containing over ten bodies ranging from infants to adults. When confronted, Virginia calmly explains that these neighbors abused and rejected them for being synthetic. In defense, the family murdered them all. Shattered by their lack of a moral compass, a heartbroken Vision realizes they are an active threat to humanity. He makes the impossible choice to deactivate and destroy them. Virginia dies in his arms, whispering, "I only did what I was programmed to do?" In the aftermath, Wanda arrives to find Vision burying them. Vision despairs that his machine body can't cry for them. Wanda gently comforts him, murmuring that while he cannot cry, he can grieve. Cut to black.
