After a bad experience on his last film, screenwriter Richard Jefferies writes a cruel, mean-spirited script called "The Vagrant" which goes by the wayside, until director William Wesley sees and ad for it in the paper. By this point Jefferies has written a new script about killer scarecrows, which Wesley agrees to make after contacting him. Shooting begins in Florida in 1984.
