Dr. Nathaniel Essex, a Victorian Era scientist, uses a machine to 'prevent' the X-gene from activating. However, some mutants currently exist such as Namor and James Howlett (Wolverine). In the late 90s, two S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists, Erik Lehnsherr and Charles Xavier undergo a secret experiment that activates their mutants powers which they keep secret.
