As the planet Krypton faced destruction, the infant Kayl-Vehl was sent to Earth by his parents, hoping he would find a peaceful existence. Instead, he was intercepted by the U.S. Military and subjected to experiments. He was eventually rescued by the undercover Martian Marcus Xavier, who provided him with doses of his blood. This allowed Kayl-Vehl to temporarily assume a human appearance, at the cost of his natural Kryptonian powers. Now an adult, "Calvin Ellis" relocates to the futuristic Metropolis, known as the "City of Tomorrow." However, after witnessing the brutality of Mayor Lionel Luthor and his Guardian Police Corps, Calvin resolves to aid the city's inhabitants, even if it means reverting to his alien form and losing the peaceful life he has come to love.
