Brother of Menelaus, however being described as the less handsome of the two. He ruled Mycenae, the largest kingdom in Greece, and served as the over-general of the Greek expedition to Troy. He is presented as a good warrior but selfish ruler, famously upsetting his invincible champion Achilles (who refused to acknowledge Agamemnon’s right to command him ) and so prolonging the war and suffering of his men.
