In late 1823, during the conflict between fur traders and Arikara, Hugh Glass was mauled nearly to his death by a grizzly bear who he then kill. After John Fitzgerald killed Glass' half-Pawnee son, Hawk, Glass ventured to take revenge on Fitzgerald for this.
